Happy October! As the weather gets crisper, there’s no need to walk in the cold! The City of Keene has a variety of public transportation services to help you get around the city. Between catching the bus, hopping a ride with a neighbor, or scheduling a trip in advance, there are so many ways to run errands, hang out with friends, or even both at once (buses are great places to socialize)!

Expensive fare you ask? Nay, nay!

Most transit services in the City of Keene request a minimal fee or optional donation, but October is Community Transportation Month which means four weeks of Free Ride Fridays on the City Express and Friendly Bus.

Community transportation for everyone

Look for the red City Express buses that run in Keene. Anyone can ride and the fare is only $1. These buses run 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday with 24 stops in Keene. Have a bike? No problem – these buses have bike racks! The black line runs clockwise and the red line runs counterclockwise. Buses run every hour, so check out the schedule at www.cityexpress.org

Have accessibility needs?

Never fear, the Para Express is here! Buses are fully equipped and the fare is only $2 per one-way trip. With door-to-door service within ¾ of a mile of the fixed route (the same route as City Express), the Para Express can get you to Robin Hood Park, Optical Ave, Butternut Drive, Pako Ave, and even down to Sparrow Street at Tanglewood in addition to downtown, West Street, Route 9, and the shopping plazas by Route 10. So give 603-352-2253 a call – you might be closer than you think!

Are you retired and tired of driving?

The Friendly Bus can help you see more friendly faces for a suggested $1 donation (no one is denied service for inability to contribute)! This bus is reserved for people age 60 and older, so there’s no need to worry about a rogue four-year-old wiping you out at the knees. The route? Wherever you need in the City of Keene! Call 603-352-8494 one day ahead to schedule your trip (hey, that might be just the right amount of time to make a grocery list). From your home to the store, the Senior Center, Friendly Meals, medical appointments and more, the Friendly Bus will surely put a smile on your face.

Free Ride Fridays

The Monadnock Region certainly has room to grow its transportation services, but in the meantime, let’s make sure we use what is already here. Remember Free Ride Fridays in October and see you on the bus!
