The Next Generation (NextGen) Transit Project is a phased approach to expand access to public transportation in the Monadnock Region. The NextGen Project’s first goal is to launch two new programs starting in 2027. Together, they will maintain similar services that are offered today while addressing some longstanding gaps in services.
Program 1: Greater Keene Transit Service

Building off of the City Express and Friendly Bus systems, the proposal is for a hybrid fixed-route and microtransit system that provides convenient, efficient, and accessible public transportation to high-traffic locations in the Greater Keene area.
Program 2: Regional Critical Access to Care Service

A new regionwide backup system to support volunteer driver programs when they are unable to meet demand for certain critical non-emergency medical trips.
The Vision
Imagine a person who can’t afford a car but they absolutely need a reliable ride to work. Imagine senior citizens wanting to live independently but can no longer drive, and need transportation to pick up their groceries, go to pharmacy or meet other basic needs. Imagine non-drivers that need to get to medical appointments for treatments, procedures, tests or check-ups but they don’t have a way to get there. These people are our neighbors and community members. And they are the kinds of people and ride needs that the NextGen Project aims to address over time.
The NextGen Project addresses the Monadnock Region Coordinating Council for Community Transportation vision which is to develop “a regional transportation network that works for everyone.” The NextGen Project seeks to expand services over time, subject to their feasibility.
MRCC is the entity statutorily tasked under RSA 239:B:3-a to facilitate the implementation of coordinated community transportation in their region and encourage the development of improved and expanded regional community transportation services. MRCC members are transportation service providers, local human services agencies, and lived experience individuals who meet monthly.
