Everyone eats. This fundamental fact of life means that everyone has a vested interest in the food system—the complex set of land, natural resources, people, organizations, processes, and policies integral to feeding us all. However, most Americans, including those of us here in the Monadnock Region, have only a tenuous grasp of where our food comes from, who produces it, and how certain we can be that we and our neighbors will be able to access a healthful, affordable supply of food in the future.

Recognizing the stakes of cultivating our regional food system, as well as the efforts already underway to do so, the Monadnock Regional Food System Assessment aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. To celebrate the hard work underway and the progress made to date to build a stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive regional food economy.
  2. To build shared understanding about key food system opportunities and challenges.
  3. To expand potential for collaboration among food system stakeholders, and, conversely, to avoid duplication of effort.
  4. To support the production of and access to local food, in alignment with the New England-wide goal of producing 30 percent of our own food needs by 2030.
  5. To highlight areas where further data, information, and research may be needed.
  6. To identify projects in preparation of future funding opportunities.

The completed draft of the Monadnock Region Food System Assessment is available for public input.
