Regional Transportation Planning
The Commission carries out research, analyses, public information, policy development and regional planning to support State and local responsibilities to provide for safe efficient movement of people and freight throughout the Southwest Region.
Priorities for planning and recommendations for spending:

Protection of public safety

Preservation of highway capacity

Efficient use of Public Resources: existing transportation infrastructure, cost-effective future spending for system management and improvements, and avoiding destruction of natural and cultural resources by transportation infrastructure
Transportation planning includes research and planning for:
SWRPC regional transportation planning comprises interaction of several elements:
- Staff level research and analyses
- Public involvement in policy-making
- Commission participation in statewide transportation planning and policy-making
General goals of the program:
- Develop and maintain Regional Transportation Information Base of historic and current highway and traffic conditions and development patterns
- Support the Commission's Transportation Advisory Committee
- Maintain a Southwest Region Transportation Plan
